"...A letter to the County Board and signed by 12 citizens asked the Commissioners to send a letter supporting removal of the timber wolf from the Endangered Species list to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The letter also asked the County Commissioners to adopt a resolution favoring the total elimination of timber wolves not only from Ontonagon County but from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Moskwa (Joe, a Commissioner) spoke to this issue saying, "Due to the costly loss of farm livestock, hunting dogs and family pets, these predators are not a good mix with the general population of our County."
"It was now moved by Moskwa to send a letter supporting removal of the timber wolf from the endangered species list. This was supported by Pelkola. All voted in favor. Paulman abstained.
Department of Natural Resources: District 3 Report for week ending 8-1-04.
CO David Miller responded to a wolf depredation complaint along with Wildlife Division personnel. The wolf entered a barn and killed a steer that had been tied up. Control measures are being used by the department to alleviate the problem. The western U.P. is in District 3 and the eastern is in District 4. |
