The Real Cost Of Living With Wolves

Winnipeg—A special dispatch from Manigotogan, Manitoba, says: Torn to shreds by timber wolves, the remains of the body of Ben Cochrum?. A trapper, was found north of Fisher river on Lake Winnipeg, a few days ago. According to information which has just reached here. All that remained to tell of this grim northland tragedy were the trapper's bones, pieces of clothing and a rifle with a broken stock, which were scattered over a considerable distance, but the bones of eleven huge timber wolves which were found near the spot where Cochrane had been attacked, bore testimony of the unfortunate man's fierce struggle for life against overwhelming odds. Seven had been shot and four had been clubbed to death. Only when his rifle stock smashed did the trapper 'apparently, cense to fight, and the pack bearing down upon him, tore his body to shreds.

We don't how long the fight lasted or even the numbers of wolves. A educated guess would be of a pack 40-50 strong. Here is how it most likely unfolded. Ben was trapping in the area walking out on to the lake. First he heard the dreaded howl of the single wolf that hit his track. He looked behind. The beast was following his foot scent. Hot on his trail soon there was howling everywhere. There was 6, then 15, then 30, then 40, maybe 50 bloodthirsty killer wolves surrounded him.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the vicious wolves attack?

Throughout the fight for his life the ending is assured. Only one species will be alive to tell the story. As the gun blazed and the beast fell a new one replaced his fallen comrade, the gun blazed again and again in the stillness of the cold air the flash of powder the burning lead the growling the snarling, the teeth snapping, the gun blazed again and again more wolves fell. Heedless of the fallen wolves the pack advanced The gun blazed again and again. At last the dreaded sound was heard as the hammer fell on empty space. The gun was now a club the beast advance so savage was the man's blow he shattered the skulled of the wolf. The man determined to make as many of the bloodthirsty pack pay for his life. Out numbered surrounded the pack advanced sure of the prey now. The first wolf lunged and he swung the rifle with super human strength he was delighted in hearing the skull shatter.  Another wolf advanced and once more he shattered a skull. Another advance and for his final time he cracked the skull killing the wolf. The stock on his rifle shattered his club now reducedin size. This time a wolf on each side of him grabbed a arm pulling him down. The rest of the pack raced in. The noise of snapping teeth, growling, snarling, howling in delight of taking the man down, ripping shreds of meat, screaming in pain.  Dear Reader you must understand one fact about wolves a wolf does NOT kill, he eats. The man felt his flesh being ripped off saw his blood dripping to the white ice. Blood red turning the beauty of the winter into a bloody battlefield. Watching the wolf swallow his flesh time after time this was repeated until luckily he passed out from lost of blood. No man should ever have to face such horrors. But that is the price of living with wolves. Based on the true story of the his final moments on earth. Killed, devour by a wolf pack. April 17, 1922.
